I'm sure you've heard that today, Saturday, May 21, 2011, will be the end of the world, the Apocolypse, the Rapture, etc. Already knowing this, I still made a grave mistake last night. I forgot to take the Torta Setteveli, an extra I had made for my auntie's birthday party, from the freezer. It may have been my last meal on earth, and I left a delicious end-of-the-world chocolate dessert in the freezer. Oh Dio Mio!!!
I know, I know; how can I possibly call myself @foodloverkathy and not have elaborately planned my last meal? Well, last night while my Torta Setteveli was defrosting, I ate some so-so store-bought chocolate ice cream, on top of which I put some chopped chocolate and chocolate sauce (you know, just in case) and made my last meal plans. Here they are.
The antipasti -
Caponata: Eggplant is one of my favorite vegetables and I'm a sucker for agrodolce
Artichokes on top of pizza al taglio from Gabriele Bonci's Pizzarium in Rome
Lampascioni (the small sour onions from Puglia) in Agrodolce sauce
Arancini al Ragu
For the Primi Piatti -
Fish Ravioli with Seafood and its Sauce (and bread to get all of that sauce)
Pasta all' Amatriciana - It can be with bucatini, penne or rigatoni, but I can't go out without one last taste of the guanciale and the sauce on my tongue
The Fish Course(s) -
Cozze alla Marinara - Neapolitan Style Mussels
The Meat Course -
Rack of Lamb with a breadcrumb, parsley and garlic crust with a side dish of Gratin Potatoes
For the Dessert(s) -
Sicilian Granite - Something to refresh before the heavy desserts - My choices would be peach and watermelon from Bam Bar in Taormina
La Torta Setteveli - Seven Veils Cake
Cannoli alla Siciliana - with Ricotta di Pecora Siciliana, per favore
The wine -
Since this last meal stuff is serious business and I'm far from a wine expert, maybe Jeremy, Hande and Joel would help out with wine selections? In the meantime, my choices for part of the meal, would be a few wines I still think about: the Albanegra from Cantine Menhir and one or two Barolo wines.
Location, location, location -
It is just as important for a last meal. As long as I'm along the shores of the blue Mediterrenean, I would be happy. It could be Sicily, Puglia, Campania. Although I thought about making it an all-Southern Italy request, I couldn't leave Liguria and my "happy place" off the list.
A long table overlooking one of these coastlines and surrounded by all the people I love, friends and family. Now that's my idea of an earth-ending meal. Much better than left over beef borguignon and some make-shift chocolate sundae, don't you think?
The shores of Otranto in Puglia - and - Scolpello in Sicily
Panarea in the Aeolian Islands - and - Ortigia in Sicily
Positano along the Amalfi Coast - and - Vernazza in the Cinque Terre

Now it's your turn. What would your last meal be? Where would you eat it and with whom?

clever idea! I immediately thought of Torta Setteveli, of course, and calamari, but to be honest I would have abalone if it really were "the last meal" (who'd care about price, right?). My mom's deviled eggs (appropriately). Cannoli and a perfect caffe to top it off. Nutrition be damned!

Oh - wait - I missed the last two questions:
Where: Amalfi coast, at a nice table overlooking the sea which will soon come up and sweep me in!!
With whom: Roberto Saviano (*sigh*), Diarmuid O'Murchu, Sean Penn, (and other great people I can't think of right now), my family & friends (esp. Kathy, Sophia, Brian, Cameron, Barb, my mom, my bro ...) ... and we'll all go together to be with my previously-deceased loved ones!

If you've got to go, I guess there's no place nicer for it... ;)
Those arancini looks fabulous, btw!

This would have been a fantastic last meal... Everything looks fantastic. Really nice shots. The meat and arancini couldn't look better.

Thank you all for the great comments. I'm still here, too. I think it's safe to say we haven't been left behind :-) In any case, somehow the Rapture date has been recalculated to October 21. I would love to get a meal like this in before then, you know, just in case.
Paula: Nice choice of guests...thanks for including me!
Frank: One of the photos of the arancini is from a Sicilian place in Rome, it's called Mizzica. Have you heard of it? It might be fairly new, too.

I know I'm late to this post but what an elaborate feast! So good to see the fish ravioli in there and that smooth creamy torta.
My last meal would be with Mr G, of course. It would definitely include foie gras but as for the full menu, it's not something I like to contemplate :)
